The alternator in my Vauxhall Vivaro seems to be malfunctioning. The battery light is on and the voltage has dropped significantly. How can I troubleshoot and fix this issue?
ReplyFirst, check the belt tension and condition. A loose or worn belt can cause issues with the alternator. Next, test the battery voltage and make sure it is at least 12.6 volts. If it is low, charge or replace the battery. Then, use a multimeter to test the alternator output. It should be around 14 volts. If it is significantly lower, the alternator may need to be replaced.
Before replacing the alternator, check the connections and wiring. Loose or corroded connections can also cause issues. If everything looks good, it may be time to replace the alternator. You can do it yourself or take it to a mechanic.
